Warren Maxwell

Warren Maxwell is a multi-instrumetalist and the impetus behind numerous musical projects. Born in 1970, Maxwell grew up in Whangarei and went on to study jazz at the Conservatorium of Music, Wellington.

While still studying at the Conservatorium Maxwell formed TrinityRoots with fellow students Riki Gooch and Rio Hunuki-Hemopo. They quickly created a large and loyal fan base through hypnotic live performances which included unique and evocative rhythms and harmonies steeped in a lineage of soul, reggae and roots.

TrinityRoots released their TrinityRoots debut EP in October 2000, and the albums ‘True’ (2002) and ‘Home, Land and Sea’ (2004)before separating in 2005 to pursue other projects. They reformed in 2010 releasing the live CD/DVD ‘Music Is Choice’.

In 2005 Maxwell formed psychedelic blues quartet Little Bushman with Rick Cranson, and Tom and Joe Callwood, releasing the albums ‘Onus of Sand’ (2006), ‘Pendulum’ (2007), and ‘Te Oranga (2011). In 2008 Maxwell collaborated with composer John Psathas and the Auckland Philharmonia for the concert Little Bushman meet the APO. The score was performed again in 2009, resulting in the album ‘Live In Concert With The NZSO’.

Maxwell has also been involved in numerous other projects, including time with Fat Freddy’s Drop, the ‘Ihimaera’ album and performances, theatre sound design at Taki Rua and Capital E, and working on film scores – ‘Turangawaewae’ (2003), ‘Run’ (2007), and ‘The Strength of Water’ (2009).

In 2006 Maxwell received an Arts Foundation New Generation Award.
