Luke Thompson

Luke Thompson is a singer songwriter from New Zealand.

Following the release of ‘the Water EP’ in late 2011 Luke got together with friends, Mark Myers (The Middle East) multi-instrumentalist Tim hart (Boy & Bear) and Stu Larsen, to embark on a new project. Together, with about four microphones and a laptop they recorded a collection of Luke’s songs in a little borrowed space in the Welcome Bay hills. Plagued by power cuts and torrential rain, the boys remained focused and undeterred. Being holed-up in the dark, served as inspiration rather than hindrance, giving rise to some of the poignant moments of intimacy and intensity on the record.

Influenced by icons across the generations – McLean, Dylan, Cohen, LaMontagne – Luke has spent the last few years writing and recording music in his homeland, drawing the attention of audiences and critics alike. No pretension here, just a whimsical, melancholy song with a distinct clear voice.

Recent tours with Avalanche City and Tim Hart have seen Thompson take to larger stages, with his homely folk tunes. Of these songs, Luke comments "Sometimes songs just need time to grow, I don’t mean slaving over songs, I mean you just have to wait for a few years to write the ones you want to hear, and the things you want to say in the way you wanted to say them, that was the case with this record.”

“There are so many weeds when it comes to writing, I feel like I wrote two or three full records before i got to this stuff. this collection just feels so much like I feel”.

‘To The Common Dark’ was made in the contrasting settings of a wet New Zealand December and an equally wet March in Cairns, Australia; the damp sombre lashings of nature, echoing the sentiments of Thompson’s songs.
