Jeff Henderson is a multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer and performance maker. A specialist on saxophones and clarinet, Jeff also plays guitar, banjo, piano, percussion, and anything else that the music requires.

Born in 1973, Henderson attended the Wellington Conservatorium of Music, graduating in 1992. He regularly collaborates with theatremakers, dancers, artists and performers. Long-term local collaborators include Richard Nunns (Taonga Puoro specialist), performance artist and musician Gerard Crewdson, theatremaker Stephen Bain, and pianist Marilyn Crispell.

Henderson was artistic director of the Wellington International Jazz Festival for ten year, and has himself performed at many major national and international festivals. He has received several major commissions, often for large ensembles, and features on a multitude of recordings.

He has performed with internationally renowned figures in jazz, improvised and experimental music such as saxophonists Steve Lacy, Kris Wanders, Evan Parker and Jim Denley, drummers Han Bennink, Clifford Barbaro, and Mark Sanders, electronic experimentalists Toshimaru Nakamura, Thomas Lehn and Phill Niblock, pianists Anthony Pateras, Mike Nock and Chris Abrahams, guitarists Eugene Chadbourne, Tetuzi Akiyama and Marco Fusinato.

He currently performs with the bands Fertility Festival, The Melancholy Babes and Colin McCabre, produces the Bomb the Space Festival, runs iiii records, and Wellington music venue Happy.

In 2008 Henderson received an Arts Foundation New Generation award.
