Get ready to celebrate Waitangi Day at Te Puia with a jam-packed day of cultural festivities, delicious kai and wānanga.
Join us for a whānau experience full of fun, culture, entertainment, taonga stalls and delicious kai.
Daytime activities: from 9am to 3pm - come along to the Rotowhio Marae area for:
Train rides to Pōhutu Geyser (every 30 mins) - passengers can hop off by the geyser, returning on the next available train.
Kai and Inu: Available to purchase at various food locations - Te Whakaruruhau (hāngī/smoker/street food stations); Hiakai Cafe (grab and go); Pātaka Kai Restaurant: (hāngi buffet lunch).
Pā activities: Tītī tōrea (stick games), Poi and Haka lessons - 9.30am, 11am, 2pm (sessions are 20 mins long).
Te Tiriti o Waitangi wānanga: 10am, 11am, 1pm (45 min lectures in Te Whare Tapere with Te Waata Cribb).
Cultural performances: 10.30am; 11.30am; 12.30pm; 1.30pm; 2.30pm (performances run for 30 mins inside Te Aronui-a-Rua meeting house)

NZMACI talks – 60 years of the NZ Māori Arts & Crafts Institute Act – 9am to 2.30pm (every 30 mins in the NZMACI quadrant)

Evening concert: 6pm to 10pm - Te Whakaruruhau -
Te Puia is hosting a Waitangi Day Concert from 6 to 10 pm on February 6, featuring some of New Zealand’s foremost musicians and entertainers. The lineup showcases Te Puia talents like Tamati Cassidy, Paretoroa Webster Tarei, and Hunter Geary, all trained in opera and performing arts. Individually, they have graced stages in various musical theatre productions and Opera in the Pā. Notably, Tamati will take on the lead role as Viscount Raoul de Chagny in Phantom of the Opera come March. Together as the trio Toru Mio, they will perform songs in Māori, Italian, Spanish, and English.
Headlining the event is Cairo, a legendary New Zealand band formed in 1979. The iconic group, featuring Richard Anaru on lead guitar, Mickey Ututaonga on drums, Ernie Semu on keyboards, and joined by Aucklander Richard Murray on bass, promises an unforgettable night. Rewa Ututaonga and Russell Harrison, the featured singers, will deliver a mix of old school, soul, R & B, and kiwi classics, ensuring a lively and enjoyable evening of dancing.
Tickets $60.00 pp includes street food stations from 7pm. Gates open 5.45pm.
