TGIF Recital 8 September: Silent Music - Dan Poynton
45 Molesworth St, Thorndon, WellingtonRestrictions
Listed by
‘Silent music, resounding solitude’ are words from St John of the Cross, the 16th century Spanish mystic and an inspiration for this concert.
Dan’s Silent Music concerts are small quiet refuges from our noisy smartphone-infested world – meditative piano music emerging from silence, rather than frantic sound desperate to negate it. In this event – performed without the distraction of applause – you will be able to peacefully commune with the mystical seldom-heard side of composers Arvo Pärt, Mompou, Satie, Brahms and Liszt.
Dan was inspired to play this music in the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul after being mesmerised by ancient Gothic music there recently. The ethereal acoustic and awe-inspiring space make it the perfect place for this music of resounding stillness.
A previous incarnation of Dan’s Silent Music led the Christchurch Star to say: ‘Hypnotic performances. His Liszt has a spiritual intensity I have never heard on any CD…If you have Poynton's sheer musicality you can keep your audience hushed and rapt throughout.’
