De Falla El Amor Brujo - Ballet in one act
Spanish conductor Pablo Gonzalez and the NZSO Strings open Fiesta Española with Turina’s La Oracion del torero (The Bullfighter's Prayer), a work unmistakably Spanish in theme and style.
From the Bull rings of Madrid, we head to Buenos Aires for Piazzolla’s Sinfonietta, a darkly brooding work with just a hint of Tango.
Manuel De Falla remains one of the 20th century’s most influential Spanish composers. His Ballet in one act, El Amor Brujo (Love, the Magician), tells the story of Candela, a gypsy woman from Andalusia (the southernmost region of Spain) and is full of love, death and the supernatural. Written in 13 scenes, it derives many of its melodies from Andalusian folk songs and has come to be known as a defining work from De Falla. Cantaora (Flamenco singer) María José Pérez brings a distinctly Spanish voice to El Amor Brujo.
