If there is one choral work which unites the music world it would be Handel’s ever popular Messiah. For many choirs, the work is at the heart of their repertoire and the high point of the music year. It appeals to both young and old so if you have never heard a live performance you are missing a musical treat.
Messiah was composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel. Astonishingly, it took him just 24 days to write what has become the most popular and most frequently performed choral work in Western music. It is a truly dazzling composition with every solo and chorus revealing such musical imagination, wealth of ideas and extraordinary variety of invention that the work continues to astonish singers and audiences alike.
Messiah includes many well-known arias and choruses including ‘I know that my redeemer liveth’, ‘The trumpet shall sound’, ‘All we like sheep have gone astray’ and of course the famous ‘Hallelujah’ chorus.
